Our design will attach to the inside of the mouth of a pump at a community well.
A shallow cylindrical filter will fit inside the circumference of the pump's faucet. A solid chlorine ring will cover the outside of the filter. Holes in the side of the apparatus will allow it to be fastened to the pump with four bolts.
Our design will allow chlorine to mix with the water as it flows out of the pump. The cylindrical attachment will be removable so that the chlorine filter can be replaced once the supply has been depleted.
This apparatus will function successfully despite the unsteady flow of water released from the pump. The water will pass through the chlorine filter at the same rate as it pours out of the well, therefore the ratio of chlorine to water will always be relatively constant.
The exact proportion of chlorine released into the water does not play a huge role in the water's decontamination. A small amount of chlorine is better than none, and "too much" chlorine would not compromise the consumer's health, only the taste of the water.
Considering the rate of decomposition of chlorine, the filter will last for about a month before needing to be replaced.
